But natural gas is such a fantastic fuel source—affordable and domestically-produced—that we don’t want anyone to be unnecessarily worried! Should you be anxious about your furnace?

At ServiceMax, we’ve been keeping our neighbors warm and safe since 1998. We’ve got the knowledge and experience to answer your pressing questions about heating system hazards. The bottom line is that gas furnaces can be perfectly safe. They do require some special care, though! Here’s how to avoid gas heating risks.

1: Get Familiar With Your Gas Shut-Off Valve

You should know exactly where the natural gas is coming into your furnace. There’s a valve at that location that can be completely shut off if necessary. Knowing how to do this can keep you calm in an urgent situation, such as when you suspect there might be a gas leak. You should also reduce risk by shutting the gas off at the end of the winter, rather than leaving that valve open all summer when it’s not needed.

2: Clear the Area

Anything that produces heat needs to be kept away from anything flammable. Heating systems are often housed in the same areas that people use for storage, such as basements. But it is essential to clear plenty of space around the furnace to avoid the risk of fire. Keep everything at least 5 feet away. Be especially diligent about flammable items such as paper and fabric.

3: Change Your Air Filter

A furnace’s air filter isn’t there to make the air cleaner for you to breathe. It’s to help prevent bothersome particles from getting into the furnace cabinet, getting grit in the works, or overheating components by blanketing them with pet hair and dust. Keep the furnace operating safely by putting monthly air filter changes on your calendar.

4: Schedule Annual Maintenance

Every single year, your gas-powered heating system requires maintenance. This involves cleaning and lubricating, which reduce risk of overheating. It also includes a meticulous process of inspecting and testing all the components, including safety mechanisms like the flame sensor and limit switch, the heat exchanger which keeps carbon monoxide out of your air, and all the electrical components.

5: Get Repairs Promptly

If you do notice that something seems odd about your furnace, have repairs done as soon as possible. Uneven or insufficient heat, poor airflow, or rising gas bills can indicate furnace problems. Any unusual noises should be investigated. Any strange odors are cause for repair—and if what you smell is sulfurous and eggy, evacuate, because it could be a gas leak.

6: Only Trust the Pros

For your safety—and to avoid legal ramifications and voiding your warranty—it’s essential that everyone who performs maintenance or repair on any gas appliance has the necessary qualifications. In addition to licensing or certification, they must also be insured. When you have any concerns about your heating in Skokie, IL, we’ve got you covered!

Contact ServiceMax with any questions about your furnace.

The post Are Gas Furnaces Hazardous? Are you excited? Well, don’t be too hasty. There are so many things to do this time of year that it’s easy to rush or cut corners, especially with things that are so familiar and routine that you might not be paying close attention.

As much as we want our friends and neighbors to be festive, celebrate, and enjoy the season, we also want everyone to stay safe. Don’t take risks with anything electrical!

How can you be sure you’re handling your holiday lights safely? We’ve got some simple tips for you.

Inspect Your Lights

Be gentle during the untangling process! Once you’ve got everything straightened out so you can get a clear view of all your strands of lights, inspect them closely. If there are cracked sockets, insecure connections, or any spots where wires are bare or fraying, do not use that strand of lights! Only plug strands in if they are in good condition, otherwise you risk electric shock and fire.

Consider LED Lights

Older holiday lights can get quite hot. LED lights are much cooler. In addition, they use less electricity. Anytime you need to replace a strand of lights, choose LED instead of incandescent. They’ll reduce the risk of fire and keep your electric bill from skyrocketing.

Pay Attention to Outlets

Don’t overload outlets with multiple high-wattage strands of lights. And for outdoor lights, make sure you only plug strands into GFCI outlets. These are the only outlets which are safe in places where there might be exposure to water. They will shut off electrical flow within a fraction of a second when they detect a problem!

Don’t Overload Circuits

Consider which outlets are on the same circuits in your home. Adding a large amount of electrical demand to a single circuit can result in the circuit breaker tripping and all your lights going out! Try to spread out the demand, putting fewer lights on each circuit.

Keep Space Clear

Around outlets, power strips, extension cords, and strands of lights, make sure there is plenty of space. They can heat up or, if something goes wrong, give off sparks. This is especially dangerous if there are items like cloth furniture or curtains against or close to these electrical items.

Turn Lights Off

When you’re going to be away from home, and when you go to sleep at night, turn off all your holiday lights. If anything does go wrong, you want to be there and able to take action.

When to Get Help

There are times when the additional demand of the holiday season can help homeowners to recognize existing problems. Perhaps your electrical panel is old, outdated, or too limited in capacity for what you need from it. Perhaps an outlet was poorly wired to begin with, or has experienced damage. Don’t hesitate to get the help you need from an electrician in Chicago, IL!

Flickering lights, frequently burned-out bulbs, or circuit breakers tripping when lights are on are all signs that you need electrical assistance. Outlets or switch plates that buzz or crackle, spark or smoke, or are hot to the touch indicate a serious problem. And if you smell anything like burning plastic or dead fish, you could have an electrical fire on your hands. This is a serious emergency. Shut down everything you can, call for help, and be ready to evacuate if necessary.

Contact ServiceMax with any questions about your electrical system.

The post Holiday Lights? When you first need it in the fall, and every time after that, you want warm comfort, not worries and repairs! One thing that can sometimes cause major concern is when a heating system makes an odd odor.

A furnace may smell for a variety of reasons. Does it signal a serious problem? Sometimes, it’s extremely serious. But other times, it’s nothing to worry about. How can you tell whether a smell from your heating system means you need furnace repair? Here are some helpful pointers for you.

Dust

The first time you turn your heating system on in the fall, it will heat up and scorch any dust that is in and on the system. If you’ve had routine maintenance done this fall, it’s much less likely to happen, and if it does—because of dust elsewhere in your HVAC system—it won’t be as severe.

If you do smell this, it’s not really a malfunction that requires repair. What it needs is fresh air! Open your windows, even though it’s chilly out, and you should notice that the smell is gone within an hour or so. You’ve only got a problem if the smell doesn’t go away, or if it smells like something besides dust is burning.

Overheating

When you smell something more like scorched metal or burning plastic, it’s likely that you’ve got an overheating component. This is most likely to be the motor that powers the blower fan. Prompt repairs could ensure that the motor can be fixed. Continuing to overheat it by postponing repairs could lead to a totally burned-out motor that has to be replaced! If you’re concerned that you might be having this issue, schedule repair right away.

Electrical Fire

Here’s a trivia question for you. What do dead fish and electrical fires have in common? The answer is that they both discharge ammonia into the air. That means they have a very similar smell. If you haven’t got any dead fish lying around, but it smells like you do, your issue is serious.

Start by turning off the heating system entirely. Don’t just switch off the thermostat: actually shut down the furnace. Then call for emergency repairs. An electrical fire is a terrifying risk that you do not need to take. Don’t turn the heat on again until the repairs are complete.

Gas Leak

This calls for a trivia question, too: what does natural gas smell like? The answer is absolutely nothing! So how will you detect an odor if you’ve got a gas leak? That’s thanks to an additive, mercaptan, which gives gas its distinctive, eggy odor.

A smell of gas in your home is an emergency. Shut off the furnace, or all gas to the house, if you can do it quickly and easily. But most importantly, evacuate. Bring family members and pets to a safe location and call your natural gas provider’s emergency number or 911.

If you have any other questions about odd odors or furnace repair in Winnetka, IL, we’re happy to help!

Contact ServiceMax with any questions about your heating system.

The post Does This Smell Mean I Need Furnace Repair? first appeared on ServiceMax.

Your Fall Air Quality Checklist

admin

Indoor Air Quality

Evanston

Here’s your fall air quality checklist to help you figure out the best choices for your home and your family.

The post Your Fall Air Quality Checklist first appeared on ServiceMax.

As we move into the chillier part of the year, you’ll be spending more time indoors. Your heating system will be running. You’ll be breathing recirculated air, and that air might be contaminated by other people’s sneezes! Cold and flu germs and more will be trying to infiltrate your respiratory system. Indoor air quality has never been so important!

There are a wide variety of things you can do to improve your health and well-being, reduce pressure on your heating system, and gain even more benefits by taking control of your indoor air quality. Here’s your fall air quality checklist to help you figure out the best choices for your home and your family.

Humidifiers

A whole house humidifier can be added to your HVAC system. It allows you to control precisely the humidity of the air flowing through your ducts and around your home. This helps you feel just as warm even with the thermostat set a few degrees lower! You’ll run your heating system less, saving both money on your utility bills and wear and tear on the system.

Humidifiers are great for your health in the winter, too. Dry hair and skin and brittle, cracking nails are no fun. But did you know that when the delicate membranes in your sinuses get dry and cracked, it’s easier for germs to get in and set up shop? More humid air means fewer illnesses and less stress on your immune system.

Filters

Your furnace has an air filter, yes, but it’s there to protect the furnace from particles. It’s not designed to keep the air clean throughout your home. If you want less mess in your air—dust, fibers, pet hair, allergens, and more—you can have an HVAC air filter installed.

Purifiers

An air purifier is not just a fancy filter. These systems don’t just trap germs and pathogens in layers of filter. They actually kill them, sanitizing the air and dramatically reducing your risk of illness! And they do it all just with UV light, safe and chemical-free. This is an ideal option for people with special health concerns, respiratory conditions, or the elderly or very young.

Duct Cleaning

What about the stuff that’s already inside your ducts, settling to the bottom until the next gust of air sends them swirling out into your home? If you haven’t had your ducts cleaned in the last few years, this fall is the perfect time to do it. Mold, bacteria, dust, pollen, pet dander, and more is safely removed to allow you to breathe more freely all winter long.

Recovery Ventilators

You need some fresh air during the winter. You can’t just breathe nothing but recycled sneezes! But keeping your home well-ventilated would allow your precious, costly heated air to escape. What’s the solution? Your home might benefit from a heat recovery ventilator or energy recovery ventilator, which allows fresh air in while keeping heat loss to a minimum.

If you’re interested in any of these options, or want to have a conversation about indoor air quality in Evanston, IL, we’d love to talk with you.

Contact ServiceMax with any questions about your air quality.

The post Your Fall Air Quality Checklist first appeared on ServiceMax.

Spooky Sounds: Does Your Furnace Need Repair?

admin

Heating

furnace repair

Skokie

Why is your furnace making all that noise? Something going bump in the night. What’s lurking in your basement or hiding in a closet? It’s not ghosts or ghouls. It’s actually just your heating system. Why is your furnace making all that noise? Does it need to be repaired? What could be wrong? We’ll explain, so you don’t need to fear your furnace.

Groaning

It’s not some sort of monstrous complaint from an overworked furnace. Chances are, it’s worn-out bearings in the blower fan motor. Over time, they can get ground down. Having repairs done now can ensure that all you need to replace is the bearings, and perhaps some lubricant. Delaying repairs could mean the entire motor gets damaged and needs to be replaced!

Screeching

Not all furnaces have belts, but some do, to translate the power from the motor into rotational movement for the blower fan. And if a belt starts to stretch, tear, or slip out of position, it can make a terrible squealing, screeching sound! Again, prompt repair makes a huge difference. If that belt comes all the way loose, it could hit and damage other furnace components, leading to a more extensive repair.

Rattling

The most likely cause of rattling is pretty simple: something is loose. A screw, a fan blade, or something is slightly out of position so that parts rattle against one another. It could be in your furnace or, if the sound seems to be coming from your vents, it could be in your ductwork. Either way, just as with the belt, you don’t want components hitting each other and causing more problems, so get repairs promptly.

Clicking or Buzzing

These sounds can sometimes be made by simple mechanical means, with parts tapping or vibrating against one another. But they can also be electrical in origin, so it’s important to take them seriously. Electrical problems in your furnace create a fire hazard, so have it looked at by a qualified technician right away.

Whistling

Just like when you use your mouth to form a whistle, this sound is created by air rushing through a small opening. Chances are, this is happening in your ductwork, not your actual furnace. Duct leaks are so common and so wasteful that in most homes, about 30% of heated air is lost through cracks and holes in the ductwork. It’s an expensive waste, but these gaps can be sealed by an HVAC professional.

Problem Prevention

The best way to avoid having your furnace make alarming noises is to get routine maintenance done every fall, ideally before you need to turn on your heat for the first truly cold day. But no matter what time of year it is, if it’s been at least a year since you’ve gotten maintenance done, schedule it now. It can save you a great deal of trouble!

Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions about odd heating system noises or need to schedule furnace repair in Skokie, IL.

Contact ServiceMax with any questions about your heating system.

The post Spooky Sounds: Does Your Furnace Need Repair? first appeared on ServiceMax.

Have You Scheduled Your Heating Maintenance?

admin

Heating

Chicago

Heating Maintenance

Have you scheduled your heating maintenance yet this fall? You really need to be prepared. This means everything from sealing up drafty gaps to pulling out your hats and mittens from seasonal storage. But it also means getting your HVAC system ready. Have you scheduled your heating maintenance yet this fall? Make sure you do! Here’s what you need to know about it.

Effectiveness

You certainly don’t want to get to the first serious cold (and windy!) snap only to find that your furnace is not producing enough heat, or that the heat is not being evenly distributed, and some spots in your home are staying much too chilly! Having maintenance performed by a trained and qualified HVAC technician will help make sure your system is ready to do its job effectively this winter.

Efficiency

Did you know that a heating system’s efficiency drops each year? It’s true—and the drop is about 5%. But as long as you have maintenance done every single year, you can keep the efficiency just as good as it was when you bought it, at least until the system gets truly old. But why is the efficiency dropping in the first place?

Heating systems have many moving parts. Over the course of the year, it’s easy for things to get just slightly misaligned, which means the system just won’t work quite as well. Your thermostat will keep calling for heat, driving up your electric bill. Moving parts also require lubricant, and over time that wears away. Finally, dust and grit will work their way into the system and cause friction, decreasing ease of movement.

Functionality

We mentioned that you don’t want the first cold snap to find you with a heater that doesn’t work as well as you’d like. But what if your heater didn’t work at all? A breakdown can be not just uncomfortable but dangerous in our climate. Heating maintenance dramatically reduces the risk of repair needs and furnace breakdowns in the coming year, so you won’t need to worry about that!

Longevity

Gas furnaces have a lifetime of around 15 years, but that’s only if they’re properly maintained every year. Spotty, occasional maintenance will cut that life expectancy, and a total lack of maintenance will cause your system to only survive half as long! Don’t replace your furnace after 7 or 8 years if you don’t have to! Electric furnaces can last up to 20 years, but they’re equally vulnerable to a lack of care.

Warranty Compliance

To keep your heating system under warranty—which could save you a lot of money, if something goes wrong and the manufacturer might cover the cost—you need to comply with the warranty agreement. And furnace warranty agreements virtually always require that the system have regular maintenance by a licensed professional.

Safety

We mention this last, but it is of the utmost importance. You need to keep yourself, your family, and your home safe! Depending on the type of heating system you have, a lack of maintenance could leave you vulnerable to gas leaks, carbon monoxide, electrocution, or fire. Don’t risk it! Schedule your heating maintenance in Chicago, IL today.

Contact ServiceMax with any questions about your heating system.

The post Have You Scheduled Your Heating Maintenance? first appeared on ServiceMax.

Recent Advances in AC and Heat Pump Technology

admin

Heat Pumps

Chicago

heat pump repair

In recent years, there have been some exciting advances in AC and heat pump technology that really boost the efficiency of these systems. After all, refrigeration was invented in 1755. It was during the 1970s when central air conditioners became so popular in American homes that virtually all new construction was built with ductwork for them.

But as much as these things have been around forever, they have also been evolving.

AC and heat pump manufacturers don’t want to simply keep selling the same old systems. They want customers to be happier and more comfortable and, perhaps most importantly, to spend less money on the energy that powers these systems.

In recent years, there have been some exciting advances in AC and heat pump technology that boost the efficiency of these systems. Check it out!

A Little Background

Let’s first refresh your memory on the basics of how heat pumps and air conditioners work. There are two units, one indoors and one out. Indoors, super-cold refrigerant runs through the evaporator coils, soaking up heat from the warm indoor air. The now-cold air is pushed through ducts and vents by the blower fan, which is powered by a motor.

Outdoors, that heated refrigerant travels to the condenser coils and all the heat dissipates, so the refrigerant will be ready to go back inside and absorb more. The outdoor unit also contains the compressor. This large, costly component keeps the refrigerant at the right pressure so it will flow properly, absorbing and releasing, absorbing and releasing.

A heat pump works in exactly the same way, with one exciting feature that sets it apart: it’s reversible. In addition to carrying heat out of the home, it can carry heat into the home. A component in the outdoor unit called the reversing valve switches the direction of the refrigerant flow, making it possible for this one system to both heat and cool your home.

The Recent Changes

Our country—and the world—is working hard to find ways to consume less energy. It’s necessary for the health of the planet, and it’s hugely helpful for the economic wellbeing of the people. HVAC manufacturers have made great strides lately, making it possible for air conditioners and heat pumps to use significantly less energy.

Here’s what’s changed.

Coil Materials: In order for the refrigerant to change temperature easily, the coil must as well. This means that materials with higher thermal conductivity will allow the refrigerant to absorb and release heat more quickly and easily, using less energy. The new energy-efficient AC and heat pump coils are made of materials that work much better for this purpose than ever before.

Fan Motors: When a motor can only be on or off, that means that every time it’s needed, however slightly, it will draw full power. That’s how AC blower fan motors used to work. Today, variable-speed motors only use full power when necessary. Otherwise, they’re able to automatically cycle to power-saving modes.

Compressors: This is the component which draws the most power. Any changes here have a huge impact. And just like the blower fan motors, today’s compressors can run most of the time at a lower level. You’ll stay just as comfortable, though, because if high power is actually needed, it will come on automatically.

Whatever your HVAC needs, from installation to AC maintenance to heat pump repair in Chicago, IL, we’re happy to help.

Contact ServiceMax with any questions about HVAC efficiency.

The post Recent Advances in AC and Heat Pump Technology first appeared on ServiceMax.

Don’t Let Mold Ruin Your Indoor Air Quality

admin

Indoor Air Quality

UV air purification

Winnetka

We’ve got the details on exactly why mold is so bad for your indoor air quality and what you can do to keep your air free of that nasty contaminant.

The post Don’t Let Mold Ruin Your Indoor Air Quality first appeared on ServiceMax.

As autumn approaches and folks start spending more and more time indoors, it’s the perfect opportunity to think more about your indoor air quality. Do you know what kind of particles are floating around in your home? Are you concerned about staying healthy, feeling well, and enjoying fresh-smelling air to breathe all winter, while you’re cooped up?

One of the deeply unpleasant things that floats around in the air in many homes is mold. Did you know that mold is not just an unsightly greenish fuzz on forgotten leftovers? Did you know it contaminates your air as well? We’ve got the details on exactly why mold is so bad for your indoor air quality and what you can do to keep your air free of that nasty contaminant.

The Science of Mold

When you see mold in your home, you are only seeing what is known as the fruiting body, which is just part of the life cycle of mold. And when you don’t see mold, but you can smell that tell-tale mildew odor, you know it’s growing somewhere. It’s just out of sight. This makes perfect sense, because mold grows best in dark, undisturbed places.

The part of mold’s life cycle that contaminates your air is when it reproduces. The fruiting body of the mold releases spores into the air. These microscopic particles contain all the genetic information of the mold, like the seeds of a plant. They float through the air until they settle somewhere, and if they’ve landed a place with a bit of moisture and not too much light, they grow new mold colonies.

The Toxicity of Mold

Many people have mold allergies. Exposure to these spores causes allergy symptoms like itchy skin, watery eyes, runny noses, and respiratory irritation. The spores can also cause worsening symptoms in people who have respiratory conditions like asthma. Some molds are so toxic that the mycotoxins they release can cause illness even in otherwise healthy people with no allergies!

Eliminating Mold

Mold remediation, the clean-up of extensive mold colonies, is costly and time-consuming, and it requires the use of harsh chemicals. It’s generally done by professionals, and sometimes there’s so much damage that portions of the home, especially wood, can be unsalvageable. You don’t want it to get to that point!

To eliminate mold, you should target the air. Preventing the mold from reproducing will stop new mold colonies from growing. It will make your air smell fresher. And it will eliminate those toxins that can cause so much illness and irritation! And you can destroy those mold spores right in the air using nothing but light, no chemicals involved.

UV air purifiers scramble the DNA of mold spores. They’re installed inside air ducts, and they purify all the air that passes through. The mold will no longer be able to reproduce, your home will smell fresh, and you’ll have healthier air to breathe—especially considering that the UV light also targets other pathogens like bacteria and viruses!

For more information about UV air purification in Winnetka, IL, just reach out to us.

Contact ServiceMax with any questions about indoor air quality.

The post Don’t Let Mold Ruin Your Indoor Air Quality first appeared on ServiceMax.

Signs Your Mini Split Needs Repair

admin

Ductless Mini Split

Evanston

mitsubishi mini split

Here are some signs to keep an eye out for. But like any system, things can go wrong. There are a lot of components involved, so it’s inevitable that one of them will someday need repair! The key here is to catch the problem early. Prompt repair can make all the difference between a quick and minor fix and big complications, breakdowns, skyrocketing electric bills, and more.

This means that it’s critical to notice right away when something is wrong. But how will you be able to tell? You’re not an HVAC expert. Well, we are—and we can help you. Here are some signs to keep an eye (or an ear) out for. These things indicate that it’s time to get repair for your ductless mini split system.

Noises

Yes, we did mention your ear for a good reason. Just like an automobile, an HVAC system will often make an odd noise when it’s struggling with an issue. What kind of odd noise? Anything other than the humming compressor and whooshing fan is probably a sign that something’s wrong.

A refrigerant leak may bubble or hiss. A hard-starting compressor will come on with a boom or a bang. Components that have loosened from the system’s vibrations may rattle or clatter. Blower fan motor bearings groan when they get worn down. Electrical issues are sometimes noticeable because they make clicking or buzzing sounds. Whatever you hear, don’t ignore it! It’s time for repair.

Smells

Ductless mini split systems have evaporator coils—and thus condensation, and condensate pans and drains to deal with it—in the indoor unit. And where there’s moisture, unpleasant things can grow. Sour, vinegary smells can indicate bacterial growth. A mildew odor means there’s mold in there somewhere. Call in a professional to deal with any drain clogs and get the system clean.

Another odor you may detect smells like chemicals, but also rather sweet. This is the smell of refrigerant, which should be safely enclosed in your coils where you can’t smell it. It must be leaking out somewhere! A technician can detect the leak and patch and refill the system.

Performance

If you’re noticing that your ductless mini split is ineffective, or if you’re happy with the performance in some zones of your home but not in others, it’s time for repairs. It could be trouble with a blower fan or motor, preventing proper circulation.

Short Cycling

Your outdoor unit’s compressor should only be coming on three or four times an hour. If it’s happening much more frequently than that, it’s because of a problem. Worse, the short cycling itself can be the cause of more problems if you don’t get it repaired!

Inefficiency

Your electric bill can also be a useful indicator of an AC problem. Whenever an air conditioner is struggling, it will have to work harder, run more of the time, or start up more frequently. Any of these things will use more energy, so a surprisingly-high electric bill could be pointing to an AC issue. Get a technician to take a look at your Mitsubishi mini split in Evanston, IL!

Contact ServiceMax with any questions about ductless systems.

The post Signs Your Mini Split Needs Repair first appeared on ServiceMax.

Get Ready for Your AC Replacement Appointment

admin

Air Conditioning

AC replacement

Chicago

We can tell you exactly what to expect from your AC replacement appointment and how to make it go quickly and easily.

The post Get Ready for Your AC Replacement Appointment first appeared on ServiceMax.

Congratulations! You’ll be so happy with your new air conditioner. After all, that old one really just wasn’t cutting it anymore, was it? And since today’s air conditioners are so effective and efficient, the new one will be better than the old one ever was, even in its prime.

Before you can enjoy that fantastic new AC system, however, you need to have it installed. What’s that going to be like? Have you been through it before? If so, chances are, it was quite a while ago. With proper maintenance, that old air conditioner might have been running for ten or twelve years. We can tell you exactly what to expect from your AC replacement appointment and how to make it go quickly and easily.

Clear Your Schedule

If there are additional processes that have to take place before your AC installation, such as having badly-damaged ductwork replaced, your contractor will be clear about that with you when you plan your AC replacement. In most cases, though, replacing an old AC system with a new one is a straightforward swap that can all happen on a single day.

Do clear your schedule for the whole day, as the installation might take eight hours or so. However, if everything goes perfectly, it could be done in half that time! How can you improve your odds of an easy, speedy AC replacement? By following this checklist.

Plan the Approach: Where should the work truck be parked? Which door will be easiest to bring large pieces of equipment through? If anything is in the way—birdbaths, bicycles—move it to clear a wide, easy path. This means from the parking spot to the door, from the parking spot to the location of the outdoor AC unit, and from the door to the location of the indoor AC unit.

Clear the Work Areas: Around the indoor unit, make sure there’s plenty of elbow room and nothing delicate or precious precariously balanced close by. Around the outdoor unit, trim back any tree branches, bushes, or plants that have grown close. Rake to remove dead leaves, yard waste, or other litter and mess. This will help your installers and improve airflow to the new unit.

Protect Your Pets: Doors will be opening more than usual as equipment is brought through. Many feet will be hurrying around. Installers may not be able to see clearly where they’re putting their feet if they’re handling a large appliance. It’s safer for your pets (and quicker and easier for your installation techs) if your pets are kept away from the whole process in a separate room.

What Happens During AC Replacement

Your installers will check to see what they need to do to prepare the area. If you’ve already done that to the best of your ability, this part will go quickly. They’ll disconnect the old units and cart them away.
